Occasional Wine Note: Brunello di Montalcino has the longest aging and some of the most stringent vinification requirements in Italy and the result is that we get one of the most prestigious wines in the world. The first known wine labeled as Brunello dates back to 1869, but it was the contributions of Clemente Santi and then his grandson, Ferrucio Biondi, who really started to focus on using grapes from the best vineyards, with longer maceration periods and longer aging.

Today that family’s wine is the well known and highly regarded Biondi-Santi. This La Gerla Riserva is made from the original Biondi-Santi Sangiovese clones on the hills of which the village of Montalcino is perched. It was aged 4 years in wood and another in the bottle before its release. The 2015 vintage is well known as one of the best in Italy’s recent history, and the La Gerla Riserva gli Angeli is a pretty solid representation of the region and the vintage. This one is just starting to really show the goods. Lay it down or decant for a bit and drink it now with your favorite big Italian dish.

Sweet berries and cherries with flowers, orange peel and hints of leaves. Sandalwood and meat, too. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins that are polished and beautiful. Great finish. This is really impressive at the end. Best ever? So gorgeous now, but will be even more impressive in two or three years. Try after 2022

The La Gerla 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is a softly textured and fleshed out wine that shows darker and deeper fruit (compared to the 2016 Brunello that I tasted at the same time). This wine makes a great first impression, mostly thanks to that sense of quiet balance. As it opens in the glass, I notice the pretty ripeness of the vintage with dark cherry and summer plum. In all, this Riserva gives us an accessible and rich expression that will perform nicely upon release.
