Occasional Wine Note: Barolo is often referred to as the “King of Italian Wines,” so while there are so many phenomenal varietals we could have chosen to represent Italy in this allocation, why not start with the king. Picking the varietal is one thing. Picking a specific wine is another. Why this one? There is something about visiting the actual vineyards and the teams that produce the wines that make them special for sure. And even when choosing Scavino, we could have picked any number of Scavino offerings. We chose Paolo Scavino for the Club Reserve allocation because they are not only renowned for their Barolos, but you get fantastic value here as well. Indeed, if you go to wine-searcher.com and look up the Best Value nebbiolo-based wines, Paolo Scavino will have 3 or 4 wines in the top 25, with this Cannubi being one of them.

We chose the Cannubi because it is such a special and highly regarded part of the Barolo region. We thought that it would best represent the elegance and grandeur of the region. It is young in Barolo years, so the guidance would be to lay this down in your cellar for a few years, but if you must (we’ve opened at least 6 of these in the last month), decant for a bit before you enjoy.

Allocation: Spring 2023

  • James Suckling

    Critic Score: 95

Very floral nose with bright red berries, some cedary oak and an exotic hint of musk. Medium-to full-bodied with intense, spicy fruit flavors against a backdrop of lightly firm and slightly grainy tannins that together produce surprising length. Well poised and showing good pedigree, despite the difficult vintage. This will age nicely, but is great to taste now. Try from 2025.

    Critic Score: 95

Packaged with a black label, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Cannubi opens to a delicate and luminous appearance with lifted aromas of wild rose, lilac, wild berry and crushed stone. The wine shows great depth and complexity compared to some of the more subdued wines found in this vintage. This is one for the cellar. Best After 2024
