Occasional Wine Note:  In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild became the last of the Chateau to make the "1st growth" list of the Classification of 1855. The others of course being Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Haut-Brion, and Margaux. The 19th Century slight lent to the quote: "First, I cannot be. Second, I do not deign to be. Mouton I am," which then changed in 1973 to: "First, I am. Second, I used to be. Mouton does not change.." in the end, the wine has always been highly sought after. Of the 5, Château Mouton Rothschild is said to produce the most opulent and richest of wines. This 2014 offering absolutely hits that mark and at the 10 year mark, it delivering on all cylinders. Powerful and opulent from nose to a long luscious finish. This one is pretty close to perfect.

Incredible iodine, oyster, currants, peat and cedar. Yet subtle. Full body, chewy yet polished tannins and great depth and complexity on the finish. I love the spice and blueberry character on the finish. Vibrant. A sexy style of Mouton.

Unquestionably one of the great wines in the vintage, the 2014 Mouton-Rothschild offers more flamboyance, depth, and texture than just about every other release out there. Crème de cassis, violets, lead pencil, and ample creamy oak notes all emerge from this incredibly sexy, concentrated 2014 that has a terrific mid-palate, sweet tannin, and a great, great finish. Not far off the incredible 2015, it can be enjoyed anytime over the coming 3-4 decades, although 3-5 years of bottle age should do it good.
